Fireworks on the Other Side

In Alexandra Shalashova's novel, there are eleven narrators who experience and interpret events in different ways, leaving no room for any objective version. These are small patients and caregivers at a sanatorium on the other bank of the river, where children are evacuated from the City just before the war begins. Soon the bridge that connected them to the outside world is blown up, and the children are plunged into darkness. Every day they hear explosions — or the salvos of fireworks? — but they do not know if the war is still going on.
