The project library History of the Russian State is a recommended list by Boris Akunin of the best monuments of world literature, which reflect the biography of our country from its very beginnings. S.M. Stepnyak-Kraevsky 1851–1895 was one of the most ambiguous figures in the Russian revolutionary movement, in Russian literature, and in the social movement of the 19th century. He was the first to translate R. Giovanoli's novel Spartacus into Russian in 1881, he served as a prototype for the main character of the famous novel by E. Voynich The Gadfly, became a hero in E. Zola's novel Germinal, and participated in the assassination of General N.V. Mezentsev in 1878 – the head of the Separate Corps of Gendarmes. The action of the novel Andrey Kozhukhov – the most significant work of the writer, who recreated a truthful picture of the revolutionary struggle based on his own experience, refers to that critical historical moment when the narodniki, not finding a response to their propaganda among the peasantry, in search of new ways of revolutionary activity embarked on the path of political terror.
