The great Russian artist Kuzma Sergeyevich Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939) was also an extraordinary writer. "Khlynovsk" is the first part of the master's autobiography, a vivid and colorful tale of his childhood and hometown on the Volga, of the origins and beginning... of his creative path. What was the awakening to painting like? "In Uncle Vanya's attic, I found pots of oil paint and a couple of brushes. Here I also found a scrap of white tin. I painted a landscape on it. The brushes were thick, to depict the leaves of trees; then the thought came to use a brush with worn bristles to depict the crown. On the white trunks, using another color, I depicted the trunks of birch trees."
