Moscow, 1939. The glamour and poverty of the young Soviet state. Communal apartments, shared kitchens, primuses and bickering, queues for matches and soap. And next to it, the shining lights of the "National": incredible luxury for the chosen few, champagne... and caviar, un-Sovietly beautiful ladies in fur coats and "comrades" with cigars…
After one of these lavish dinners, the face of the Soviet elite suffers losses: one by one, a famous journalist, a photo correspondent for TASS, and a translator for "Intourist" meet their deaths, and the murders are meticulously concealed from the public. Why? Because there is no crime in the USSR, or for some completely different reasons? And how is this connected to the night killer-strangler, whom the best operatives of the MUR are trying to track down?
