The treatise occupies a central place in Kierkegaard's work, essentially finding itself at the convergence point of his pseudonymous works and those signed with his own name, in the center of the most complex and conflicted intertwining of his aesthetic, ethical, and religious ideas. The treatise was conceived by the author as a continuation and meaningful conclusion to "Philosophical Fragments," signed under the name Johannes Climacus.
