In addition to established notions of ghosts, werewolves, and other mythical creatures, the author mocks some modern pursuits, such as the desire to become more beautiful than God created you, or the widespread struggle with obesity, reducing seemingly good intentions to what they actually represent — vanity as a form of moral deformity.
