"This book is an attempt to reconstruct, as much as possible, the personality of the historical Jesus, as he was before Christianity: the one who walked the expanses of Galilee two thousand years ago, gathering around him supporters for the establishment of the Kingdom of God, and after entering Jerusalem and attacking the temple was arrested and executed by the Romans for inciting rebellion.
Fortunately, writing a biography of Jesus of Nazareth is somewhat different from writing a biography, for example, of Napoleon Bonaparte. The task is somewhat like assembling a large puzzle with only a few pieces available: the researcher has no choice but to fill in the missing parts based on their most successful and reasoned guesses about what the picture should look like as a whole. The great Christian theologian Rudolf Bultmann used to say that the search for the historical Jesus is ultimately an inner spiritual search.
And indeed, if we place the figure of Jesus in the social, religious, and political context of the era in which he lived (a time of a slowly rising rebellion against Rome, destined to forever change the faith and cultic practice of Judaism), his biography, in a certain sense, writes itself.
The Jesus that emerges in the process may not be quite the one we expected to see; it will definitely not be the Jesus that most modern Christians know. But ultimately, this is the only Jesus we can arrive at through historical methods.
Everything else remains a matter of faith".
