Decoding the Maya Code: How Scientists Deciphered the Writing of an Ancient Civilization

Inscription in the Maya language was discovered several hundred years ago, but it was only recently that it was read. And if it weren’t for the research talent of several scholars, including our compatriot Yuri Knorosov, the Maya language would likely remain a mystery to this day. The story of this amazing decipherment is told by archaeologist and Maya specialist Michael Coe, a professor at Harvard University. Coe personally knew Knorosov and did much to popularize his work even during the Iron Curtain. His book recounts the breakthroughs and difficulties that accompanied one of the greatest intellectual achievements of the 20th century.
