«Little House on the Prairie» – this is the second book of the famous autobiographical epic by American writer Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Laura and her sisters, along with their parents, leave the forests of Wisconsin and begin to settle in Kansas,...
on the land of wild Indian tribes.
The Wilders have to endure a dangerous crossing of a turbulent river, a fire on the prairie, and a terrible fever that nearly destroys the whole family. The proximity to the Indians becomes increasingly dangerous: they may suddenly enter the house in the absence of Dad, frighten Mom and the girls, and take all the food and animal skins that Dad has hunted.
But Dad, as in the first book, remains the main man in the family, a jack-of-all-trades (able to build a house, dig a well, and play the violin), lovingly devoted to his daughters and faithful wife. He once again arranges life for the family from scratch. And Dad is very brave: he emerges victorious in his confrontation with a cougar.
Mom endures all the hardships of life with remarkable patience and calmness, whether it's a long journey in a wagon or the unsettled living conditions in a new place. On the road, she heats an iron on the fire and irons her daughters' dresses on the wagon seat, and in the freshly built house by Dad, she places a porcelain shepherdess on the mantelpiece – a symbol of family well-being and comfort.
Thanks to the writer's remarkable artistic memory, her attention to people and things, the book is read easily, with lively interest, and the readers aged 10-12 naturally have the desire to compare their own childhood with Laura's childhood.
