Conversation on the Road

This edition presents selected stories and narratives by Tanizaki, belonging to the early period of his creativity. They vary in form and material, but much unites them – a noticeable inclination of the author towards everything unusual, paradoxical, and the presence of a convoluted plot intrigue, as well as a special type of hero, obsessed with passions and tormented by internal contradictions. And, of course, the characteristic sly manner of writing of Tanizaki, in which the main points are communicated not directly, but subtly, as if accidentally. He could say to the readers through one of his characters: «I always tried to tell you the truth, only not directly, but in a roundabout way, and if you didn’t understand my hints, blame yourself!» All the works included in the collection are published in Russian for the first time – translated by T. I. Redko-Dobrovolskaya.
