Bitter Sugar

Galicia, 1853. The rainiest winter in history has destroyed the harvest, and a devastating cholera epidemic begins among the population. Desperate Galicians, dreaming of a better future for themselves and their families, decide to leave their homeland and go to Cuba to earn some money on the sugar plantations. But this journey prepares them for trials that their naive minds could not even imagine.
This is the true story of seventeen hundred young men who went to Cuba in search of work and ended up in slavery at the will of Urbano Feijoo de Sotomayor, a Galician settled on the island.
