Tales of the Spring Rain. The Tale of the Western Mountains

Samurai of high rank Takebe Ayatari (1719–1774) and the adopted son in a merchant family Ueda Akinari (1734–1809) were connected during their lives by the relationship of teacher and talented student, sometimes crossing into rivalry. And in the history of Japanese literature, their names stand together as the founders of a new genre of narrative artistic prose – yomihon.

The collection "Tales of the Spring Rain" by Akinari consists of novellas of historical, fantastic, and adventurous nature, while "The Tale of the Western Mountains" by Ayatari is a story of love and samurai duty, based on real events of a bloody drama that played out in a village near Kyoto.
