In the board game "Paradox," one of you will become the Paradox of Omnipotence, the creator of the island, while the others will become its prisoners. The victims of paradoxes have their own personal goals to achieve in order to...
escape the island. But the difficulty lies in the fact that only the Paradox of Omnipotence can see the island, and he has no intention of letting anyone go... The unfortunate prisoners will have to wander blindly to explore the territory and recreate the layout of the game board's cells on their tablet. Only the first one to complete their mission will be able to leave the island.
How to play?
The player who decides to become the Paradox of Omnipotence takes a screen and creates the island behind it: randomly assembling the game board from tokens. The other players receive a tablet, a figurine, and character tokens, as well as a marker. The island's prisoners take turns giving their character figurine to the Paradox and naming one of the fruits. The Paradox places the figurine on the specified cell of the game board and then marks the exact location of that cell on the player's tablet. Now each player has their starting position.
On their turn, a player can perform 2 movement actions. To do this, they announce to the Paradox which direction they are going, and the Paradox moves the hero's token behind the screen and names the cell where the prisoner ended up. All players at the table can hear this and can use it for their purposes. Each step provides information; however, a new twist may bring not only benefits but also unpleasant surprises. What awaits the prisoners on the island:
Fruit cells give players different bonuses depending on their character. For example, one can restore health, move safely across the island, or restore used bonuses.
In the camp, one can restore health and energy.
The Oracle helps to discover up to two neighboring cells of the island without moving to them.
Mirages send horrifying visions, causing the prisoners to weaken and lose health.
Escher nodes cause wandering, moving the player one extra cell in a random direction.
Portals work almost the same way but move much further.
Anomalies cause the loss of health, energy, fruits, or wandering across the island in an unknown direction.
However, negative effects can be removed by moving safely. To do this, it is enough to spend one energy.
When the prisoners have made their moves, the Paradox of Omnipotence will begin to act! Yes, he also wants to escape from the island, so the player behind the Paradox will do everything possible to hinder the other heroes. He has his own tokens, his incarnations on the island: Bush, Boulder, and Wave, among which he distributes 3 of his actions. The Wave can injure a prisoner on a cell next to the ocean. The Bush can move one cell in any direction and injure prisoners where it stops, while the Boulder can push a hero standing on an adjacent cell with it.
Can the island's prisoners die? Yes, if they lose all their lives. And no, they can't, because immediately after, they revive in the camp with full health and energy. Immortality? Yes! But for it, the heroes will pay with their freedom...
Who wins?
To achieve victory and escape from the island, a prisoner must complete the mission stated on their tablet. For example, visiting several different cells of a certain type or fulfilling a specific condition. Each hero has their own goal, so the gameplay for each of them will be unique. However, the Paradox also has his own mission: to leave the island, he must cause the death of 5 of his prisoners. Will the heroes find themselves trapped, or will the Paradox orchestrate their demise? Will all of them die once, or will only one die multiple times? None of this matters, as any death will count in favor of the Paradox. But only the one who first completes their mission will escape from the island!
