An ancient Celtic legend about the all-consuming and tragic love of the noble and brave knight Tristan and the beautiful queen Isolde served as the plot for numerous literary works during the Middle Ages. Most of them have come down... to us in fragments or adaptations. At the end of the 19th century, the prominent French scholar, medievalist literary critic Joseph Bédier collected numerous excerpts and reconstructed the text of the French prose romance from the 12th century - the source of all subsequent adaptations. In a delicate stylization, Bédier revived the old, artless intonation of the romance, clearing it of unnecessary details. "The Romance of Tristan and Isolde" (1900) in the adaptation by J. Bédier has taken on new life. This edition includes a postscript by the renowned literary scholar N.R. Malinovskaya, as well as necessary comments. The book reproduces 128 illustrations created by the outstanding German artist Robert Engels for the collectible French edition of 1900.
