Jules Michelet (1798–1874) is a famous French scholar, writer, and historian. "Witch," a so-called "historical novel," is both a work of art and a kind of monograph on the role and place of women in the Middle Ages. Michelet creates... the image of a genius woman, a benefactor witch. The bride of the devil, the bride of the wind, has a delicate soul, comparing herself to a sad plant of the desert, lacking roots. The heroine continuously studies medicines and poisons, rediscovering nature for people, penetrating into the future, calling upon the past. The philosopher J. Bataille, while criticizing this work, nevertheless acknowledges that it is "a masterpiece of Michelet in terms of poetics."
