HistoriCity: Urban Studies and the History of Modernity

Cities are one of the key reference points for modern historical consciousness: their emergence, development, and decline are used to determine the vector of human civilization's development. This book is devoted to the historicity of cities—a dynamic intersection of various... temporal projections that shape the images of the city and urban memory, created by a multitude of competing practices, communities, and institutions. The authors of the book are predominantly specialists in intellectual and cultural history; thanks to them, it becomes possible to trace over a long period of time (from the late Middle Ages to contemporary relevance, from medieval chronicles and engravings to graffiti and street art) how and by whom the images of the city are created and transformed. By addressing the history and modernity of cities, analyzing the diversity of boundaries and connections between the present and the past, the authors of the collection aim to stimulate a dialogue between urban studies, intellectual history, cultural sociology, public history, and other fields that study the transformation of the fabric of urban life in its temporal perspective.
