Dogs in Cities

"Dogs in Cities" is a popular science study of the centuries-old history of the coexistence of dogs and people in large cities. The book consists of three large parts, each revealing this little-studied yet relatable topic in its own way.... The part "Dogs in Cities" is a sociological essay built on dialogue with contemporary philosophy and anthropology, as well as on the author's own research materials, uniting the themes of the city, human, and dog. The parts "Dogs in History" and "Dogs in Literature" focus on historical events and literary heroes, showing the evolution of the image of the dog in Russian society over the centuries. Myths about black dogs and knight dogs, legendary dogs of the First and Second World Wars, favorites of Alexander II, Nikolai Nekrasov, and Leo Tolstoy—these and many other stories are present in Maria Barikova's book "Dogs in Cities."
