George Francis Dow, historian and antiquities collector, author of many books on America's past, believes that there were no darker pages in maritime history than those that tell of the voyages of slave ships. All sea vessels with holds packed... with black slaves, captured during tribal wars or kidnapped in peacetime, were headed from the coast of the Gulf of Guinea to the West Indies, to the American colonies that became the United States, where the unfortunate were sold or exchanged for various goods.
The book collects the memories of ship doctors, captains, and passengers, as well as written reports for parliamentary commissions investigating the slave trade, and describes its commercial structure.
The narrative is accompanied by more than 50 engravings and other illustrations.
