The History of Russian Police

Our book will take you through the most vivid pages of the history of the Russian police — from the founding of the Robbery Order under Ivan the Terrible to the detective police during the reign of Nicholas II. The "golden age" of the Russian police is presented in the most detail — the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, when the work of detectives of the Russian Empire was recognized as the standard in many European countries. "The History of the Russian Police" is based on rare documentary materials and memoirs of famous Russian detectives: this includes "Memoirs of the Former Chief of the Moscow Detective Police" by Arkady Koshko (1929): under him, at the International Congress of Criminalists held in Switzerland in 1913, the Russian police were recognized as the best in the world in terms of crime detection; the work of Ivan Vysotsky "St. Petersburg Metropolitan Police" (1903) and the memoirs of the director of the Police Department Alexey Lopukhin, famous for the "Azev Case," "The Present and Future of the Russian Police" (1907).
