«Heart of Darkness» is a novella by Polish-English writer Joseph Conrad, acknowledged as a master of adventure and sea novels. This work was first published in its entirety in 1902. At the time when «Heart of Darkness» was written, many... authors idealized English colonialism. However, Conrad had a dual attitude towards this phenomenon. Of course, he respected English order, but he also sympathized with the local population of the colonies. It is these contradictions that are reflected in «Heart of Darkness», which was written under the impression of a journey to the Congo Free State. The work is adapted for English language level A2. For the reader's convenience, the text is accompanied by comments and a glossary.
