The great English playwright of the Elizabethan era, Christopher Marlowe, who was once as popular as William Shakespeare, lived just twenty-nine years. Born into a shoemaker’s family, Marlowe showed a desire for knowledge from an early age, especially for ancient languages (while studying at Cambridge, he translated Ovid's "Love Elegies" into English; after its first publication in 1599, the translation was burned by order of the Archbishop of Canterbury for its immoral content). After graduating from university, he moved to London, where, following the staging of "Tamburlaine the Great," he became a celebrated playwright. The success of the play was incredible, Marlowe's name roared across Britain, also boosted by the author’s scandalous behavior (he earned a reputation as a libertine, duelist, and even sorcerer). Christopher Marlowe managed to write six plays before being killed in a drunken brawl in a Deptford tavern.
