Honoré de Balzac. The father of the naturalistic, realistic novel - this is how he described his method: "I do not invent human nature, I observe it in its past and present. I portray people not as they ought to... be, but as they actually are." The author was considered immoral, condemned for such sincerity in depicting French society of the Second Republic. Many of his contemporaries came to his defense, including the novelist George Sand, with whom he was friends throughout his life.
George Sand. She occupies one of the most honorable places among the representatives of French romanticism. She was called the advocate of all women, as she fought against oppression and prejudice for the truth. Sand witnessed the rise and fall of romanticism in literature. She acknowledged the merits of realism as a movement, supporting her dear friend, Honoré de Balzac.
