The plot of the drama «Without a Dowry» revolves around a beautiful but poor girl, Larisa Ogudalova, who desperately seeks love in a world full of greed, injustice, jealousy, and vanity.
The main theme of the comedy «The Profitable Place» is bribery. In this work, Ostrovsky explored the nature of corruption, trying to understand the thoughts of bribe-takers and their justifications. Although the play was written more than a century and a half ago, it remains relevant to modern audiences.
The translation into English with commentaries was done by American scholar, expert in the field of Russian language and literature Norman Henley.
