The appearance of this textbook is related to the fact that the traditional Program for Musical Literature for Children's Music Schools was published in 1956 and, without any qualitative changes, went through several editions in 1962, 1970, 1979, and 1982.... Naturally, many settings and thematic plans of the standard program have become outdated and do not meet the demands of new approaches and methods of musical education for children. In recent years, other program models and curricula have begun to emerge, adapting the course content to new historical and socio-cultural conditions. This textbook is based on many years of experience in teaching the subject of Musical Literature in Children's Music Schools, as outlined in the author's programs and methodological recommendations of B. Lisyanskaya, Yu. Ageeva, A. Khotuntsev, M. Kuklinskaya, and others. The most significant changes in these programs pertain to Russian music of the 20th century. Therefore, in addition to traditional topics, the textbook includes an overview of the life and works of composers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as A. Lyadov, V. Kalinnikov, S. Rachmaninoff, A. Scriabin, and I. Stravinsky. The state program does not address the music of composers from the second half of the 20th century at all. This textbook includes sections dedicated to G. Sviridov, R. Shchedrin, as well as a review session on representatives of the Russian avant-garde E. Denisov, S. Gubaidulina, and A. Schnittke. The last chapters of the textbook provide a brief overview of the development of jazz and a small glossary of jazz terms. In creating this textbook, we took into account that one of the main tasks of music schools is not only to develop the musical abilities of children and their understanding of the basics of classical and contemporary musical creativity but also to prepare active listeners and music lovers. Therefore, our book also includes additional introductory materials. They are grouped under the heading 'TheyTell Us That...' and are aimed at the broad mass of the children's audience.
