Reinhold Messner is an Italian traveler, mountaineer, and writer from South Tyrol. In the autumn of 1986, he set a record that at that time was impossible to believe — he became the first person to summit all 14 eight-thousanders in the world without supplemental oxygen, including 2 of them solo. He has over 3000 ascents, 100 first ascents, and 70 published books under his belt. In this book, Messner discusses mountaineering, drawing on materials and documents from more than the last 100 years. The text is complemented by unique and previously unpublished letters from the Himalayas by legendary climbers such as Albert Mummery, Wilhelm Noyce, and many others. These letters recount happy and difficult moments, victories and failures, and many of the letters will later become farewells.
