Dead Souls

The poem Dead Souls was translated into many other languages during the author's lifetime. It was incredibly successful. No one before or after Gogol managed to describe the vices and weaknesses of the Russian person so vividly and sharply, to reflect the most important problems for Russia so vividly and truthfully. 160 years have passed, and the poem sounds as if it was just written. Chichikovs, Korobochkas, Nozdrevs, Plyushkins, Sobakevichs – their aspirations, feelings, actions do not seem to us echoes of the past. These characters acquire a modern and sharp resonance as we watch more and more new plays and films based on this immortal poem.
