Thornton Waldo Burgess (1874-1965) – an American naturalist-researcher, a classic of children's literature of the 20th century. He was very knowledgeable about animal behavior and could wonderfully tell stories about them to children. Over time, Burgess began to record these...
stories. Thus, a huge cycle of tales – about 15,000 – emerged about Peter Rabbit, his friends, and other inhabitants of the fictional area created by the author: the Green Forest, the Laughing River, the Friendly Pond, the Purple Hills, and the Thorny Hollow.
The heroes of the second book in the series sometimes find themselves in difficult situations, but they always draw the right conclusions. Outwardly unremarkable Uncle Jabbs turns out to be a wonderful singer. He is sometimes prone to being conceited, but the inhabitants of the Green Forest and the Laughing River quickly manage to reform him. And the strange newcomer, the porcupine Dick Touch-Me-Not, may not be handsome, but oh, how interesting he is, helping to teach a lesson to the bully Rui and his grandmother, the fox Pluticia, as well as the cunning coyote.
The author lovingly and meticulously describes the characters and habits of his heroes, while also weaving in information about their way of life: what they eat, how they hunt, what their homes look like, etc.
An excellent, captivating, and educational read for children aged 5-8. The book is also great for family reading.
