With a baggage of fresh knowledge and a veterinary diploma, young James Herriot arrives in Darrowby, a small town lost among the hills of Yorkshire. No, the textbooks said nothing about the realities of the English countryside, the customs of local farmers, and the genuine work of a veterinarian that Herriot had dreamed of. But no matter how absurd the situations he found himself in or the difficulties he faced, he was always saved by a truly English sense of humor and an endless love for animals.
Decades later, Alfred White (the real name of James Herriot) returned to his adventures as a fledgling veterinarian (he began writing at the age of 50). A collection of his amusing and touching stories, «About All Creatures – Great and Small», composed of the first two books, was published in 1972 and was a tremendous success. This book was followed by others. Today, the name Herriot is known worldwide, and his works are popular among readers of different generations and have been translated into dozens of languages.
The book was first published in Russian in 1985 in an abridged version, with some fragments and chapters omitted. This edition features a complete translation with restored omissions.
