"Citadels" is a world-renowned board game by Bruno Faidutti that first appeared in 2000 and has now been translated into 25 languages. Overall, the game can be described as a card-based city-building board game, but in fact, "Citadels" are absolutely unique and combine several genres, including a psychological game. During the game, players receive gold, choose cards of districts for their hands, and then may carry out construction by purchasing these districts for gold. The goal of the game is to build the most prestigious, i.e., the most expensive city.
It sounds quite simple, but everything changes with character cards…
The thing is, at the beginning of each round, players secretly choose their characters; that is, no one knows which characters their opponents will choose. After receiving and selecting a character card, you pass the remaining cards around the circle. This adds elements of bluffing to the game, and you will need the ability to predict moves. Characters not only determine the order of play but also provide special advantages and actions. The Merchant earns more gold, the King gets the right to choose first in the next round, and the Assassin can disrupt the turn of any character.
All of this immerses the game in an incredible gripping atmosphere of intrigue and adds a psychological level, almost like in "Mafia". You will not only need to plan the construction of districts and choose a strategy but also dynamically adjust it based on character choices, as you will not always get the role you would like to choose. "Citadels. Deluxe" is an enhanced and redesigned edition that includes fully redrawn cards (more than 70) of increased size and a new design. This version includes eight basic characters, ten characters from the expansion The Dark City, as well as nine absolutely new ones. In addition, many elements and characters have been redesigned to provide an interesting, vibrant, and balanced gameplay.
The game offers several scenarios with a ready-made set of cards, but if you wish, you can create your own combinations of characters and districts.
In the box, you will also find plastic gold coins and a large crown figure.
This game is suitable for a duel one-on-one as well as for a large group and a party in the spirit of "Mafia". The rules themselves are very easy to learn, and the level of play depends on your skill.
How to play?
Each player receives 2 gold coins and 4 district cards. Gold is spent on many purposes, but primarily it is needed for construction. The more expensive the district, the more gold is required for its construction.
As mentioned above, each round consists of two parts:
First, the first player (the holder of the crown) takes the deck of characters, shuffles it, and discards a certain number of cards face-up and one face-down. Now he must choose one character from the remaining cards and pass the deck clockwise. All players choose a card for themselves.
Now the King, which is the first player, sequentially calls the characters to serve by naming their numbers. If a player has a character with that number, he reveals the card, and his turn begins. For example, the Assassin may be hidden under number one, and the player who chose him gets to play. On their turn, players choose what resource to receive: either 2 coins or one district card of their choice. Also on their turn, they can use their character's ability.
This continues until all players have taken their turn.

Who won?
The game ends when any player places in front of themselves, that is, completes the last eighth district. Players take one last turn, and the final scoring takes place, which is the calculation of the total value of all your district cards. The player with the highest score wins.
