The Picture of Dorian Gray

«The Picture of Dorian Gray» — a gothic novel about a young beauty for whom the desire for eternal youth becomes a dangerous bargain with his own conscience. In Oscar Wilde's vision, the London high society of the late Victorian era appears not just as a glittering society, but as an environment where wit, the cult of beauty, and moral impunity easily change a person from within. The artist Basil Hallward paints a portrait of the young aristocrat, while Lord Henry Wotton instills in him a simple and terrifying thought: youth — the only true value, and it must be lived without regard for the consequences. From this moment, the desire to remain eternally beautiful ceases to be a mere fantasy. While the hero himself does not change externally, the portrait bears the marks of every moral fall. The novel introduces temptations, harsh actions, ruined destinies, and an increasingly desperate attempt to hide from the world what the secret image is becoming.
