The Kid in Milk

«The Kid in Milk» — a satirical novel about a young writer who takes on a bet to make a famous author out of a person who cannot write. The story unfolds in the literary environment of the mid-1980s, where name, connections, and a well-crafted image often mean as much as talent. Behind the comedic scam lies a harsh conversation about vanity, market trends, and the price of someone else's success. At the center of the plot — the attempt to turn an ordinary person into a recognized author and the observation of how easily reputation begins to live by its own laws.

After a random bet, the narrator chooses a simple worker, Vitya Akashin, and begins step by step to create from him the figure of a «genius author». To do this, he invents a biography, a manner of behavior, a set of necessary words, and even an appearance that should convince those around him of his rare gift. The literary environment gradually becomes involved: critics, recognized writers, fans of trendy movements, and those who can turn rumors into reputation. The more convincing the fictional image becomes, the more noticeable the boundaries shift between joke, career calculation, and someone else's fate.

The nameless narrator — a young poet and writer, self-assured, passionate, and in love. It is he who launches the risky intrigue and tries to control it until it begins to spiral out of control. Viktor Semyonovich Akashin, or Vityok, — a semi-literate worker from Mytishchi, chosen for this experiment. Among the important figures is also Nastya, a young poetess from the bohemian environment, critic Lyubin-Lyubchenko, and Nikolai Nikolaevich Gorynin, a recognized master around whom part of the literary circle revolves.
