Joseph and His Brothers

The novel «Joseph and His Brothers» (1943) was written by Mann over many years. The author began working on the text in Munich, and completed it while in exile. In order for Mann to resume work on the novel, his eldest daughter Erika risked returning to Nazi-occupied Munich to retrieve the manuscript from their father's confiscated home. Today, «Joseph and His Brothers» is considered one of Mann's best works. In 1968, the novel was translated into Russian by Solomon Konstantinovich Apt (1921–2010) — a Soviet and Russian philologist, translator of ancient and German literature. This edition of «Joseph and His Brothers» features color illustrations by the French painter, engraver, and portraitist James (Jacques Joseph) Tissot (1836–1902).
