Buddhist philosophy has often compared the ephemeral nature of earthly existence to a dream. The foundations of traditional society, class boundaries, and Confucian morality strictly limited the daily life of a person and their audacious thoughts. Perhaps this is why the theme of dreams as a free land, where truth is revealed, where any miracles are possible, where one can live an entire life in a single night and become whoever the soul desires, arises so frequently in classical Eastern literature. And earthly life can turn out to be just as wonderful a dream.
