Dürer is compared in scale of talent and breadth of interests with the great Italians Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo. Once he translated some biblical stories into the 'language of pictures' — and they became popular among the people. Erasmus of Rotterdam said of him: 'Whatever he depicts, even that which cannot be depicted: fire, rays, thunder, flashes of lightning, the veil of fog, all sensations, feelings, finally, the entire soul of a human being, manifested in movements, hardly even the voice...'
