On the seventeenth floor of a New York hotel, Danilo Aracki is pursued by the shadows of his ancestors. They have found him again. And once more, they awaken in his memory what he would like to forget. On this long night, the entire history of his family flashes before Danilo's eyes. Beneath the windows of their ancestral home in Karanovo, a German soldier is once again marching, counting the last hours of his sister Veta's life. Grandmother Simka Galichanka heals with words and herbs. Mother Natalia disappears along with the twins after the bombing. Grandfather Luka Aracki ascends into the sky before the eyes of the entire city. They are all here now, in the hotel room. Among the shadows, only brother Peter is missing. The search for his brother will lead Danilo to the Meskwaki Indians, and the prophecy of Simka Galichanka will come true.
