Dialogs on Faith. Conversations with Martin Scorsese

On March 3, 2016, Father Antonio Spadaro met with director Martin Scorsese at his home to talk about «Silence». This film not only tells the story of the persecution of Jesuits in Japan, but also reflects the Italian-American director's thoughts on his relationship with faith. This conversation marked the beginning of a dialogue that continues to this day. Each of the dialogues is dedicated to one of the themes valuable to Scorsese: from his upbringing in 1950s New York to the recent «Killers of the Flower Moon», which are the result of Scorsese's deep reflections on God and faith. An especially important topic for discussion is the historical meeting between Pope Francis and Scorsese, which prompted the latter to write a screenplay for a film dedicated to the life of Jesus – a response to the Holy Father's appeal to creators. On these pages, Scorsese and Spadaro discuss the career of the Oscar-winning director, his thoughts on faith, his fears, and sources of inspiration, allowing the reader to see a new, previously unpublished portrait of one of the leading contemporary directors.
