To see how the idea of a single god emerged and evolved, and what interest groups it served. How did monotheism arise? Where did those Jews go who worshiped Yahweh but were not monotheists? And what relation do the ancient beliefs of the Jews, which did not fit into the strict monotheistic canon but have been preserved in the popular environment for centuries, have to the development of the two other major monotheistic religions — Christianity and Islam?
