The tale of an ordinary man driven to complete ruin and despair by a number of circumstances beyond his control, explained by the conditions of serfdom, became in Dmitry Vasilyevich's story a convincing indictment against the main social evil of that time - serfdom. The story of Anton-Goremyka not only evoked compassion and pity for the oppressed peasantry, but it also stirred feelings of outrage and shame in people for the fact that such a thing was possible and still happens in Russia, resonating as a call to fight for the liberation of the people......
