Horror Studies. Genre Updates in the 21st Century

After its rise in the 1980s and fall in the 1990s, the horror genre began a moderate yet steady rise in the 2000s. However, scholars noted back in 2010 that critics and fans of horror films discussed the genre in terms of a "crisis." But soon everything changed. Horror flourished and experienced a renaissance. New authors emerged (Robert Eggers, Jordan Peele, Ari Aster), new subgenres appeared (metahorror, post-horror, folk horror), and many classic films and franchises received remakes and reboots ("Saw," "Scream," the series "The Twilight Zone"). These processes are predominantly explored through American material in the new book by philosopher and film scholar Alexander Pavlov. Special attention is given to the changes in the political character of horror films, which have reflected numerous issues of different societies for the past fifty years. Alexander Pavlov is a Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, and Head of the School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Humanities of the National Research University "Higher School of Economics." He is the author of the books "Bad Cinema" (2022), "Post-Postmodernism" (2023), and others.
