Berlin and Surroundings

The collection of essays and articles by the Austrian writer and journalist, compiled by the well-known translator and Germanist M.L. Rudnitsky, includes texts from Berlin newspapers of the 1920s-1930s. During the Weimar Republic, Berlin became a place where a new urban landscape of post-war Europe was born. On the one hand, the city was actively being rebuilt and expanded; on the other hand, wars, street politics, and economic stagnation seemingly reshaped its inhabitants and unwitting immigrant guests from within. The dynamic portrait of this vibrant metropolis, sketched in newspaper columns by Joseph Roth, still reads today as a vivid portrait of a city that has once again become a place for dialogue among various cultures. The writer creates a gallery of urban types and street scenes, reminiscent of Bulgakov's Moscow, where fantasy is replaced by observation and the unique Berlin style. The publication is accompanied by archival photographs.
