The speeches of the most famous Russian lawyer Fyodor Plevako are more captivating than any novel. Having handled over 200 cases, he became a legend even during his lifetime. Stories of how Plevako managed to win nearly hopeless cases quickly... spread into anecdotes. He began his legal career immediately after reforms were implemented in Russia that made justice public and introduced judicial investigation into the criminal process for the first time, along with the jury system. The adversarial nature of the court required the presence of lawyers. From the very beginning of his career, Plevako often took on the defense of the impoverished and underprivileged, which earned him recognition and public affection. When the famous lawyer passed away unexpectedly in 1908, huge crowds of Muscovites from all social classes gathered to bid him farewell. One can do without a lawyer, but not without the truth!
