Evgeny Adolfovich Kibrik (1906–1978) was a Soviet painter, graphic artist, and master of book illustration. After years of study under outstanding masters (T. B. Fraerman, K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, P. N. Filonov), he developed his own original drawing style at an...
early age, especially vividly expressed in his book graphics. Thus appeared the famous series of illustrations for "Kola Bruynonu" by R. Rollan, "The Legend of Tyl Ulenspiegel" by Ch. de Coster, "Taras Bulba" by N. V. Gogol, Russian heroic bylinas, and many other works - a special, incomparable world of Kibrik's images, paving the way for a new, realistic art of the book.
"The Work and Thoughts of an Artist" is the final work of E. A. Kibrik, a collection of his memories and reflections, the main focus of which is devoted entirely to art. It is an invitation to the creative workshop and, more broadly, to the very soul of the artist, who experiences moments of inspiration and long hours of painstaking labor. Before the reader's eyes, the process of creating a work is reconstructed, in which intuition and the rigor of analytical thought go hand in hand, verifying and challenging each other. The free, sincere, often confessional narrative is at the same time deeply professional: the author writes about composition, tonality, proportions, the search for a graphic language most suitable for a particular subject, summarizing and systematizing years of experience.
