Writers June Hayward and Athena Liu were meant to be rising stars at the same time. But Athena is a literary sensation, while June's novel doesn't sell. It seems that no one in the modern world cares about stories of... ordinary white girls. So, when June witnesses Athena's death in an accident, she acts impulsively: she steals her colleague's unfinished novel about the untold heroism of Chinese laborers on the fronts of World War I.

What does it matter that June will edit Athena's draft and send it to a literary agent as her own work? What does it matter that she will allow her new publisher to release it under the pseudonym Juniper Song and put an ethnically ambiguous photo of the author on the cover? When a story deserves to be told, it doesn't really matter who the storyteller is, does it?
