Barry Edward O'Meara (1786-1836), a physician of Irish descent. Served in the British Navy. Accompanied Napoleon to the island of St. Helena, where he was his attending physician for three years. He became involved in a conflict between Napoleon and... the island's governor, Hudson Lowe, whom he accused of inhumane treatment of the prisoner. In 1818 he was expelled from the island. In 1822 he published his memoirs "Voice from Saint Helena Island," in which he exposed the cruel treatment the French emperor was subjected to on the island. The book immediately became a bestseller and went through numerous editions. It is rightly considered one of the most truthful and noteworthy books about Napoleon during his exile.
