The metro is the fastest type of urban transport. Probably, everyone has used it at least once. But not everyone has thought about the fact that the metro is a whole underground world, vast, complex, and very interesting.
This rich book...
filled with diverse information helps to get to know it better. It is dedicated to the Moscow Metro, opened in 1935, which is considered the most beautiful in the world.
The reader will learn where the first "subways" appeared on our planet and what they were like, how the metro was designed and built in Russia, how underground paths are laid, what "quicksands" and "tunneling shields" are,
which objects connected the first lines of the Moscow Metro, and what happened at the metro stations during the Great Patriotic War.
A lot of interesting things are told in the book about how clean air is supplied to the metro, what unique lamps are installed at different stations, how over time the cars, escalators,
turnstiles, and tickets changed, and finally, where the trains sleep and how passenger safety is ensured. And, of course, the author talks about what discoveries can be made in this extraordinary museum underground.
About the Author
Natalia Volkova. "In my childhood, I dreamed of being an archaeologist, a teacher, a translator in turn. I became an English teacher. I wrote poetry since childhood but never took it seriously.
After university, I stayed at the department, wrote a dissertation, and taught. But I kept writing poetry. And then, at some point, I realized that while working on my scholarly work, I was slipping into an imaginary world.
Heroes would come, jostle, interfere, and demand that I write about them. And one fine day, I took a strange step: I left my old job to write children's books.
It was unexpected, but since then, life has changed, and incredible miracles have begun to happen. For example, my first book of poems was published. Then - a second one. Then - two fairy tales. Then - educational books about Moscow.
And all the time I want to try to write something new.
Now I work in a library, lead a literary studio for children and an English language club. I love to travel, discover new places, and meet new people.
My favorite place is Scotland, because it is very beautiful, sparsely populated, but it has the sea, cold and harsh. And also Scotland is the homeland of my favorite writers: Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson.
I also really love English theater and, of course, Shakespeare. I love walking with my children and dog, looking at the water, and drawing. I am trying to raise two sons and a little dog named Clio, whom everyone calls Klyushka.
Winner of the Mihalkov, Ershov, K. Vasiliev prizes, member of the Union of Writers of Moscow, participant of young writers' seminars in Lipki and "Around Detgiz".
