Who is Well Off in Russia: How Prisons are Organized in Modern Russia

The author records the state and situation in a Russian prison during the year 2022. The conditions of detention for prisoners, prison medicine, nutrition, regime, atmosphere in the cells, visits, transportation, and many other details from the lives of detainees... are described in her new book by the well-known human rights activist and journalist Eva Merkacheva.

Behind each page are the human destinies of not only the prisoners but also the victims of their crimes and law enforcement officers. The author also writes about women’s colonies, about "red zones" where employees of the special services serve their sentences, about known inmates of famous pre-trial detention centers, about egregious cases of abuse of power, about mistreatment and torture, about the selfless work of human rights activists trying to improve the conditions of inmates, about the legendary Andrey Babushkin.

The book contains a lot of statistics, little-known facts, and real stories.

An appendix to the main text is a unique brief "guide" to Moscow’s prisons.

In the concluding part of the book is published a letter addressed by Eva Merkacheva to the President of the Russian Federation V. V. Putin and his response.
