Each hieroglyph includes readings (upper and lower), meanings, and examples, as well as showing the correct order of strokes in the hieroglyphs. The readings are labeled with kana. The upper readings (on, onyomi) are written in katakana, while the lower readings (kun, kunyomi) are written in hiragana. The underlined part of the lower reading is the part of the word that is "carried" beyond the kanji, meaning it is written in the alphabet during mixed writing.
