The sufferings of platonic love and the impossibility of being near Lotte push the hero closer and closer to the abyss. The novel in some way reflected events from Goethe's life: the writer spoke of his love for Charlotte Buff, whom he met in 1772, and the tragic ending of the novel was linked to the death of his friend, who was in love with a married woman.
