Stepan Petrovich Shevyryov (1806-1864) was a poet, translator, critic, and philologist — one of the key figures of Russian culture during the Nicholas era. An active participant in the "Lyubomudry" group, a prominent figure in Slavophilism, and a leading critic... of the journals "Moscow Herald" and "Moscowite," he was among those who tried to organically synthesize contemporary German philosophy and the quests of German Romanticism with the traditions of Russian poetry and thought. The path of Shevyryov as a poet encompasses the search for his lyrical "self," various translation strategies, and methods for renewing Russian versification. The new edition more than doubles the corpus of Shevyryov's poetic texts previously published in scholarly editions. For the first time, works by Shevyryov are presented in full, created not only during the Pushkin era but also later, when he became a panegyrist of the government course. This edition also includes Shevyryov's translations from Tasso, Schiller, Goethe, and Dante, which were significant events in the development of Russian poetic culture at the time.
