The basic set of "Carcassonne" with the expansions "River" and "Abbey", along with a new anniversary expansion in one box!
The board game "Carcassonne" needs no introduction. For 20 years, the creation of Klaus-Jürgen Wrede has delighted the most avid board...
gamers and continues to capture the hearts of new, inexperienced players. 20 years, just think about it! This is how long the masterpiece from the world of board gaming has been celebrated in 2021, which rightfully deserves the title: over the years, "Carcassonne" has repeatedly become a laureate of various awards and exhibitions; and how many expansions and alternative versions have been made based on it? It’s simply countless!
The board game "Carcassonne" is beloved by many players around the world for its simple rules, low entry threshold, and short game duration. But beneath the exterior of simplicity lies a multifaceted and engaging gameplay experience. Each game is played unpredictably and rarely resembles the previous one. The theme underlying the game is the exploration of territories that spread in all directions from one of the largest medieval castles called Carcassonne, after which the board game is named. Participants in the game process become feudal lords who scout the surrounding territories and take control of the most advantageous lands.
In "Carcassonne", the actions of the players are extremely simple. On their turn, a player must take a cardboard square with a section of medieval landscape and place it on the table next to the already laid squares following the principle of dominoes. The new square must continue the existing world - a road connects with a road, a pasture with a pasture, a city wall with another segment of it. When placing the square on the table creates a new object (for example, a road diverges from an intersection), the player who placed this square can claim this object for themselves. To do this, they must take a wooden figure from their reserve and place it on the square.
It is now in their interest to develop and complete this object (in our example - to close the road at the next intersection). Objects must be developed with known caution: if the player does not complete this object by the end of the game, they will not score anything for it. Upon completion, the player removes their figure from the object and gains a certain number of points.
The key strategic moment in the game is the time when the player decides, "where to place" the new square of land. The player chooses what is more advantageous for them, as one square can offer several placement options with different consequences. Should they continue their own object or prevent an opponent from completing their monastery/city/road? Anger a cunning move of one opponent or stir up everyone's emotions with their successes?
A simple choice affects not only victory or defeat in the game but also the emotional mood of the entire group. And such a choice is made with every new turn!
Moreover, the significance of the choice increases as the game approaches its finale. Fewer free squares remain in reserve, while the number of placement options for the square only increases with each turn. At the same time, players have fewer chances to complete started objects or correct the consequences of "enemy sabotage". The tension, as expected in a good game, increases, resistance among players rises, and the intensity of emotions reaches peak values. It’s best to play it yourself: reading about others' experiences cannot compare to your own sensations.
